Filtering facepieces classification
EN 149:2001+A1
Amended Standard
EN 149:2001
standard was superseded by an amended version, EN 149:2001+A1:2009 in June 2009.
EN 149
introduced two new product usability categories and new standards for operational parameters,
setting amended test requirements for all particulate respirators and related PPE protection levels.
EN 149:2001 was adopted by CEN (European Committee for Standardisation) and is binding
for all Member States. How filtering facepieces are classified? The new standard introduces the
difference between filtering facepiece for one work shift and filtering facepiece for multiple
shifts. To identify the classification on the product, the following markings are used:
- “NR” for non-reusable filtering facepieces (up to 8 hours)
- “R” reusable filtering facepieces for more than one work shift
Dolomite “D” test
With the new norm, the clogging test is currently:
- optional for NR filters
- mandatory for R filters
The letter D indicates that the facepiece passed a clogging test with Dolomite
dust; therefore, it is particularly well-performing even in environments with high
concentration of dust, maintaining at the same time a high level of comfort.
All BLS products meet the Dolomite test requirements, which means that they are especially well-performing
and long-living.
1. Non-reusable filtering facepiece
(classification and “NR” mark)
- New long exposure test: mandatory
- Clogging test with Dolomite powder
(classification and “D” mark): optional
- Example of classification:
EN 149:2001+A1:2009:FFP2 NR
2. Reusable filtering facepieces
(classification and “R” mark)
- New long exposure test: obligatory
- New 24 hour storage test after long
exposure test: mandatory
- New penetration test after storage: mandatory
- New test for product cleaning and disinfecting before
penetration test: mandatory
- Clogging test with Dolomite powder
(classification and “D” mark): mandatory
- Example of classification: EN 149:2001+A1:2009:FFP2 R D
BLS product complete mark example
Product “NR”: BLS 226 FFP2 NR D EN 149"2001 CE 0426
Product “R”: BLS 525 FFP3 R D EN 149"2001 CE 0426
Even if they are certified according to new standard EN 149:2001+A1:2009, on filtering facepiece the mark is
EN 140:2001 (CEN rules require that the mark has the basic version of the standard without any amends).
